London Markets: FTSE 100 ends lower in half-day of trade

U.K. stocks on Friday fizzled into the finish of the trading year.

The FTSE 100 slipped 0.3% to 7384.54 in a half day of trade on the London Stock Exchange, with more than two-thirds of components losing ground.

For the year, the FTSE 100 UKX, -0.25% ended with a 14% gain, underperforming the 27% advance for the S&P 500 SPX, -0.30% and the 21% gain for the Euro Stoxx 50 SX5E, -0.03%.

The midcap FTSE 250 MCX, -0.25%, which is more exposed to the U.K. economy than the top index, rose 15%.

The British pound GBPUSD, -0.16% fell 1% vs. the dollar but GBPEUR, -0.18% rose 6% against the euro in the first year the U.K. was outside the European Union.
